SAT Math - 6 Math Skills You must understand and exercise for that SAT
SAT math problems are nothing like the problems inside your textbook or on your teachers' tests. Therefore, you have to prepare differently.
Research and practice the following skills regularly if you plan to complete well on the SAT test.
Skill #1 Order of Operations
You must know an order of operations to be able to solve SAT math problems. You will see issues that will use the order of operations in unusual ways so if you're not certain relating to this skill you will make a mistake.
An order of operations is parenthesis, exponents, multiplication/division from left to right, and addition/subtraction from left to right. (PEMDAS)
Skills #2 Fractions
Most of the math problems will be based on fractions. So, you have to have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. You should be in a position to convert fractions to percents and fractions to decimals. You will need to understand compound or complex fractions as well. Don't assume you don't need to practice fractions, it could cost you points.
Skill #3 Multiplying Binomials
A very important algebraic skill that must be mastered for the SAT test is multiplying binomials. Understanding how to multiply binomials helps to understand trinomials, quadratics and the quadratic formula. A lot of algebra concepts revolve around this skill that you need to master multiplying binomials.
Skill #4 Factoring Trinomials
You have to be able to factor trinomials. It's the reverse of multiplying binomials and it is an essential skill for algebra. However, factoring trinomials is a skill that must definitely be practiced since it requires the capability to think backwards.
Skill #5 Pythagorean Theorem
A number of the problems will require you to understand the basics of the Pythagorean theorem. So take time to work several problems finding the hypotenuse or legs of the right triangle. You will be glad you probably did.
Skill #6 Slope
The ability to discover the slope of a line and to use the coordinate plane product is essential. You need to practice locating the slope, while using slope intercept form, and coordinate graphing.
Don't expect SAT math problems to be like algebra problems, but be ready to use the skills above to assist identify the answers. It requires practice. So, practice these skills regularly when preparing for the SAT make sure you will be able to focus on the solution and never the procedure.
